RiverWoods at Exeter Runners Raising Money & Support for NH Families in Need

RiverWoods community outreach efforts to culminate in gala auction fundraiser for Child and Family Services of NH.

A group of runners from RiverWoods Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) in Exeter, NH had more than the finish line in mind when running in the recent Manchester City Marathon. The RiverWoods runners raised more than $2,500 for Child and Family Services of NH (CFS), officially kicking off a partnership which is on track to culminate in a fundraising auction and gala next fall.

Since its founding in 1994, RiverWoods residents have held an annual fundraiser for another local non-profit. That 17 year RiverWoods tradition continues with the CFS partnership.

“The race may have ended, but it’s really just one stop on the journey for RiverWoods and Child and Family Services.” said RiverWoods CEO, Justine Vogel. “CFS helps one of the most underserved and vulnerable populations. Too many families are struggling this time of year and RiverWoods residents and employees are honored to partner with such a vital organization.”

RiverWoods raised a record $70,000 for CFS last fall at a similar live and silent auction and gala evening. More than 300 attendees from the greater seacoast community attended. The staff and residents of RiverWoods donated hundreds of hours of time to plan and prepare for the evening. Both organizations hope the 2012 fundraiser will be an even bigger benefit for local families in need.

“Partnering with RiverWoods has been an energizing experience for all of us at Child and Family Services,” says Mike Ostrowski, president and CEO, “and with the marathon, we certainly hit the ground running for our new year of service together. We are amazed by the vitality of RiverWoods residents and staff and are thankful for all the ways they are helping us to better the lives of children and families.”

CFS is one of the oldest non-profits in New Hampshire devoted specifically to the issues of child wellness and family strength.

About RiverWoods: RiverWoods Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) is nationally accredited, Charitable non-profit organization that owns and operates three vibrant, self-contained, life care communities with easy access to all the charms of New Hampshire and New England. Conceived by a grassroots group of seacoast area residents, RiverWoods opened in 1994 and remains true to its founders' original inspiration - that growing older should enhance, not diminish, the opportunity for a productive and rewarding life. At RiverWoods, you can enjoy life to the fullest in an inspiring setting with people who share your interests and way of thinking. For more information visit the RiverWoods website at www.riverwoodsrc.org or call 603-658-3014.

HRCU Home Loan Helps Local Family

Jack Peduzzi, Sr. Project Manager at The Housing Partnership; Marty Chapman, Executive Director of The Housing Partnership; Mr. & Mrs. Felix Mercedes; Bill Cormier, Partner at Hourihane, Cormier & Associates; and Julie Coakley, HRCU AVP of Lending & Business Development.

On Thursday, November 3 Holy Rosary Credit Union (HRCU) closed its first Home Loan in conjunction with The Housing Partnership (THP), a not for profit affordable housing developer based out of Portsmouth.

The property was purchased by the Mercedes family, who are now the prideful owners of their first home. It is one of five properties acquired and rehabilitated by THP utilizing federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) funds provided by the City of Rochester.
The collaboration was born when Bill Cormier of Hourihane, Cormier & Associates approached HRCU to work as a team with The Housing Partnership to offer these homes for sale. THP, well versed in the complexity of federally financed property rehabilitation, owns and operates an additional 12 affordable rental housing units in Rochester.

In 2009, the City of Rochester was chosen as one of five cities in the state to share $18.5 million dollars granted by the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The NSP program is operated by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and is administered by the New Hampshire Community Development Finance Authority (NHCDFA). The Neighborhood Stabilization program is designed to regenerate neighborhoods in decline due to foreclosure, abandonment and blight; of the $18.5 million dollars granted, Rochester was awarded $2.5 million for revitalization efforts.

HRCU, The Housing Partnership, and Hourihane, Cormier & Associates look forward to further collaborations in providing homes to first-time buyers through the NSP program.

HRCU’s home loan is provided in conjunction with special listed homes on the market with Hourihane, Cormier & Associates. For more information, please contact Bill Cormier at bill@billcormier.com.

HRCU Gives Back to Area Food Pantries

Brian Hughes (President & CEO HRCU), Kathy Radwan (Farmington Food Pantry), Susan Ford (Homeless Center for Strafford County), Kathy Ford (Homeless Center for Strafford County Board of Directors), Torey Kortz (SHARE Fund in Rochester), Judy Strate (Somersworth SHARE Fund), Patricia Vachon (Community Food Pantry in Somersworth), David Vachon (Community Food Pantry in Somersworth), Darrin Janakis (Dover Food Pantry) and Dana Flanders (Board Chairman HRCU).

On Friday, November 18th, HRCU President and CEO, Brian Hughes and HRCU Chairman of the Board Dana Flanders presented $500 to each of six area food pantries, as follows: Community Food Pantry in Somersworth, Dover Food Pantry, Farmington Food Pantry, the Homeless Center for Strafford County, the SHARE Fund in Rochester and the Somersworth SHARE Fund.

This has become an annual tradition for the credit union, a holiday tradition that the entire HRCU staff takes pride in year after year. Providing for local area food pantries gives the staff and members of HRCU a sense of satisfaction and community especially during these times of need.

“Every year the need is greater,” said Hughes. “And, while the economy remains challenging for many, we’re proud to make contributions that can help those who are less fortunate. We hope that by giving this money on behalf of our members again this year, our Credit Union will bring some joy to the lives of many local residents.”

Holy Rosary Credit Union is a full service financial institution proudly serving more than 16,000 members including youth in the State of New Hampshire with assets over $170 million dollars. Garrison Players Holds Auditions For February Musical Comedy

Garrison Players, the Dover area’s all-volunteer community theatre group, will hold open auditions for The Beckoning, an original musical comedy which holds a comedic mirror to today's political world, on Thursday, December 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, December 10 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Featuring characters well-known from all sides of the political spectrum--politicians, candidates, pundits, protesters, terrorists, Tea Partiers, entertainers - the show is a fast-paced revue of musical political satire and much more. Imagine if "The Daily Show" merged with "The Capitol Steps," and you'll have a pretty good idea of what The Beckoning is about. Packed with song parodies, sketches, dance, fake broadcasts with faux commercials, it is a hilarious send-up of the state of the world today.

Dan Bernard, screenwriter and playwright for stage and radio, will be presenting his musical comedy The Beckoning as a benefit performance in collaboration with the Garrison Players in February 2012. Garrison Players is looking forward to working with Dan and producing this exciting new show. Dan enjoys bringing audiences an eclectic comedy experience, merging improvisers, "regular" actors, musicians, singers and other artists in unusual combinations, yielding a tasty product that serves a roomful.

The Beckoning calls for actors who are comfortable not only playing comedy, but doubling and tripling roles. All songs are parodies of well-known popular songs from the 1960's to today. This is a fun show that calls for a collaborative spirit, sense of play and an open mind.

Roles needed are: a large-ish guy to play Rush Limbaugh and/or Chris Matthews, among other smaller roles; two women to play Rachel Maddow (MSNBC host), an Occupy protester with monologue, and other smaller roles. Some dance is helpful for these main roles, and singing skills are necessary. Three to four other actors (two men, two women) with the ability to play comedy and various roles in one show are also needed. Singing is a real plus. A range of ages are suitable to these roles.

Garrison Players is a nonprofit, volunteer-based community theatre group dedicated to enriching the cultural life of the area by presenting high-quality theatrical performances geared for family audiences. Established in 1953, the players encourage people of all ages to enjoy and participate in the many facets of the performing arts; and to help maintain the Garrison Players Arts Center. For more information about auditions, shows, or the Garrison Players, visit the website at www.garrisonplayers.org.

From left are former Portsmouth Superintendent of Schools and City Councilor Robert Lister, Portsmouth High School Principal Jeffrey Collins, Daniel Webster Council Boy Scouts of America Executive Director Mike Kauffman, Service Credit Union Vice President of Marketing Karen Benedetti and Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire Executive Director Steve Wade.

Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire, the Daniel Webster Council Boy Scouts of America and Service Credit Union officials presented a $13,500 contribution to Portsmouth High School.
The donation was part of the proceeds from the 2011 Service Credit Union Boston-Portsmouth Air Show featuring the United States Air Force Thunderbirds.

Proceeds from the air show also helped support two organizations, Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire and the Daniel Webster Council Boy Scouts of America, as well as a multitude of other New Hampshire nonprofit organizations including Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“Service Credit Union was delighted to be the proud title sponsor of the 2011 Service Credit Union Boston Portsmouth Air Show at the Portsmouth International Airport at Pease. As the title sponsor of this tremendous event, we are honored to take a leadership role in serving our communities,” says Karen Benedetti, Vice President of Marketing at Service Credit Union. “We take pride that we can help our local Portsmouth High School with some of the proceeds from the air show.”

Daniel Webster Council Boy Scouts of America Executive Director Mike Kauffman and Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire Executive Director Steve Wade, along with Benedetti, presented the check to Portsmouth High School Principal Jeffrey Collins during a Pease Development Authority meeting Thursday, November 17th. Collins said the donation would go toward wireless capabilities for the high school.

“The check presentation to Portsmouth High School is part of the organizations’ continuing commitment to produce an air show that not only supports their mission but also the great work of other not-for-profits and municipalities. Service Credit Union Donates Computers and Printer to Somersworth Safe Haven

The children of Somersworth Youth Safe Haven Program will now have six new desktop computers and a printer, thanks to a generous donation by Service Credit Union. Volunteers from the credit union were also on hand to set up the computers.

The credit union has continually stepped up with a substantial donation for the afterschool and summer programs. With this contribution, the safe haven staff can help the children with homework and other online activities along with teaching them Internet safety.

“We are extremely grateful to Service Credit Union for more than four years of helping these kids,” says Betty Eaton, Director of Safe Haven. “If it wasn’t for Service Credit Union and their help, we would not have this top quality program. I can’t say enough about their phenomenal support.”

The program mentors youth ages 6 - 18 in an afterschool homework lab, activities program, gym program, community service opportunities, and a six-week summer program. One of their main focuses is giving youth a place to do their homework and get help if they need it. There are always staff and volunteers on hand to make sure the youth's homework is all done.

The Youth Safe Haven Program is designed to help low-income at-risk children ages 6-18 who live mainly in the Somersworth Housing Authority homes or are referred by the local SAU. The program currently helps more than 50 children from working low-income families.

“We are extremely fortunate that we are able to aid our community in this important and vital way,” says Gordon Simmons, President/CEO of Service Credit Union. “Service Credit Union strives to be a leader in corporate citizenship, supporting non-profit and educational programs in the communities which are served by the credit union. Somersworth Youth Safe Haven Program fits into our vision of helping others.”

Service Credit Union is a full service financial institution, offering a wide range of financial products to its members. With 38 branch locations including two staffed 24/7 contact centers, and full internet banking services, Service Credit Union serves anyone who lives or works in New Hampshire (excluding Coos County), 4 towns in Cape Cod, MA., and all branches of the U.S. Military and Department of Defense employees and their families. With over $1.9 billion in assets, Service Credit Union has 21 branches in New Hampshire, one in Massachusetts, and 16 branches on U.S. military bases in Germany.

Raiche & Company CPAs, P.A. Newsletter

2011-11 Newsletter - In 2012, Many Tax Benefits Increase Due to Inflation Adjustments

Our office would like to make you aware that, for tax year 2012, personal exemptions and standard deductions will rise and tax brackets will widen due to inflation. Please read further to see which inflationary measures may affect your return next year:

By law, the dollar amounts for a variety of tax provisions, affecting virtually every taxpayer, must be revised each year to keep pace with inflation. New dollar amounts affecting 2012 returns, filed by most taxpayers in early 2013, include the following:

  • The value of each personal and dependent exemption, available to most taxpayers, is $3,800, up $100 from 2011.
  • The new standard deduction is $11,900 for married couples filing a joint return, up $300, $5,950 for singles and married individuals filing separately, up $150, and $8,700 for heads of household, up $200. Nearly two out of three taxpayers take the standard deduction, rather than itemizing deductions, such as mortgage interest, charitable contributions and state and local taxes.
  • Tax-bracket thresholds increase for each filing status. For a married couple filing a joint return, for example, the taxable-income threshold separating the 15-percent bracket from the 25-percent bracket is $70,700, up from $69,000 in 2011.

Credits, deductions, and related phase outs
  • For tax year 2012, the maximum earned income tax credit (EITC) for low- and moderate- income workers and working families rises to $5,891, up from $5,751 in 2011. The maximum income limit for the EITC rises to $50,270, up from $49,078 in 2011.The credit varies by family size, filing status and other factors, with the maximum credit going to joint filers with three or more qualifying children.

  • The foreign earned income deduction rises to $95,100, an increase of $2,200 from the maximum deduction for tax year 2011.
  • The modified adjusted gross income threshold at which the lifetime learning credit begins to phase out is $104,000 for joint filers, up from $102,000, and $52,000 for singles and heads of household, up from $51,000.
  • For 2012, annual deductible amounts for Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs) increased from the tax year 2011 amounts; please see the table below:

Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs)Self-only coverageFamily coverage
Minimum annual deductible$2,100$4,200
Maximum annual deductible$3,150$6,300
Maximum annual out-of-pocket expenses$4,200$7,650

The $2,500 maximum deduction for interest paid on student loans begins to phase out for a married taxpayers filing a joint returns at $125,000 and phases out completely at $155,000, an increase of $5,000 from the phase out limits for tax year 2011. For single taxpayers, the phase out ranges remain at the 2011 levels.

Estate and Gift

For an estate of any decedent dying during calendar year 2012, the basic exclusion from estate tax amount is $5,120,000, up from $5,000,000 for calendar year 2011. Also, if the executor chooses to use the special use valuation method for qualified real property, the aggregate decrease in the value of the property resulting from the choice cannot exceed $1,040,000, up from $1,020,000 for 2011.

The annual exclusion for gifts remains at $13,000.

Other Items
  • The monthly limit on the value of qualified transportation benefits exclusion for qualified parking provided by an employer to its employees for 2012 rises to $240, up $10 from the limit in 2011. However, the temporary increase in the monthly limit on the value of the qualified transportation benefits exclusion for transportation in a commuter highway vehicle and transit pass provided by an employer to its employees expires and reverts to $125 for 2012.

  • Several tax benefits are unchanged in 2012. For example, the additional standard deduction for blind people and senior citizens remains $1,150 for married individuals and $1,450 for singles and heads of household.

Please feel free to reach out to our firm via phone or email anytime to talk about your personal tax situation. We are always here for you!

2011 Dover Fire Toy Bank Now Accepting Donations

The 2011 Dover Fire Toy Bank is now under way.

The Dover Fire Toy Bank has been organized by current and retired members of Dover Fire & Rescue for more than 35 years.

The community -– area businesses, seniors, families, school groups, civic groups and others -- have been very supportive and generous in the past. Donations of toys, games, clothing, gift certificates and monetary donations have enabled the toy bank to help those less fortunate each year. The Toy Bank would not be successful without the community's continued help.

This year, the 2011 Dover Business of the Year, Holy Rosary Credit Union, has graciously offered support and sponsorship of the Dover Fire Toy Bank. St. Mary church has again offered the Dover Fire Toy Bank a location to organize and wrap all the gifts in the basement of their Parish Hall.

Here is how you can help:

- Collect new toys within your organization for age groups from newborn to 15 years old. If you need a collection box, please call 603-516-TOYS, leave a message and we will get you one for your business;
- Gift cards to area businesses, mall stores, and grocery stores are always appreciated;
- Hand knitted hats and mittens are needed for the cold winter;
- Collect monetary donations within your organization and shop for gifts;
- We will pick up donations at your site or you can drop off new, unwrapped items at these locations: Dover Central Fire Station (9-11 Broadway), South End Fire Station (27 Durham Road) or the North End Fire Station (262 Sixth Street) up until Christmas evening;
- Monetary contributions can be picked up at your location or mailed to following address. Please make checks out to The Dover Fire Toy Bank: The Dover Fire Toy Bank, P.O. Box 1712, Dover, NH 03821-1712.

Also, Holy Rosary Credit Union will accept donations on behalf of the Toy Bank. Stop in and make a donation at any time and it will be forwarded to the Dover Fire Toy Bank.

Contact Jenn Myers at 603-516-6153, Brendan Driscoll at 603-516-6169 or Josh Ambrose at 603-516-6153 to help out with wrapping or for more information.

To leave a message, call 603-516–TOYS (8697). Join us at the toy workshop (downstairs at St. Mary’s Hall on Chestnut Street) to help wrap presents. All ages are welcome.

GARRISON PLAYERS PRESENTS SHERLOCK HOLMES MYSTERY

Tom Dunnington as Dr. Watson and Phil Adams as Sherlock Holmes in the mystery, “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, opening Friday, November 18 at 8 pm at the Garrison Players Arts Center in Rollinsford.

DOVER – Garrison Players, the Dover area’s all-volunteer community theatre group, presents Hound of the Baskervilles on November 18-20 and December 2-4 at the Garrison Players Arts Center, Route 4 in Rollinsford. Please note that there are no performances on Thanksgiving weekend. Evening shows are at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 3 p.m.

A mystery adapted for the stage by Tim Kelly of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic novel, the play is directed by Garrison Players newcomer, Chris MacEachern.

Audience members are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to place in the Dover Fire Department’s Toy Bank box at the theatre. Tickets, at $18 for adults and $12 for students, are available online at www.garrisonplayers.org, or by calling 750-4ART.

Probably the most famous and popular of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, Hound of the Baskervilles deals with the curse of the Baskerville family, and the fiendish killer hound which stalks its members. Sir Charles Baskerville has died under mysterious circumstances, and his nephew and heir, the young Sir Henry, has been threatened even before his arrival at Baskerville Hall. Enlisting the aid of Sherlock Holmes, he sets out for his ancestral home in the company of Dr. Watson, Holmes' trusted colleague, a journey which brings him to danger, mystery and suspense.

Hound of the Baskervilles features long-time Garrison Players actor Tom Dunnington in the role of Holmes’ sidekick, Dr. Watson, and Phil Adams in the role of Sherlock Holmes. Adams has performed with Seacoast Rep and Prescott Park, as well as in the Garrison Players season opener, The Butler Did It. Playing the imperiled Sir Henry Baskerville is Seth Mazzaglia, with Jessica Lynn Berman as his girlfriend, Kathy Stapleton, and Chris Gempp as half-mad brother, Jack Stapleton. The play also features husband and wife Leslie Hamblin and Tim Robinson as Lady Agatha Mortimer and the sinister butler, Barrymore. Filling out the Baskerville Manor’s household staff are Mary Irons as the fearful Mrs. Barrymore and Carol Adams Bitov as the timid village maid, Perkins.

In the true community theatre mode, this play is directed by Chris MacEachern, with her daughter Lizzie as Stage Manager, and another daughter, Katie, playing the role of the troubled and secretive Laura Lyons; as well as Megan Davenport Karas and her mother, Carol Davenport, working on the period costumes with Barbara Rowe; and Producer Carol Seely with husband Scott, who designed the sound for the production.
MacEachern says that “The inspiration for some of the plot comes from the legend of Squire Richard Cabell, who lived during the 17th century. He was known as a passionate hunter and a “monstrously evil man.” He died in July 1677, and it is claimed that on the night of his interment, a pack of phantom hounds came baying across the moor to howl at his tomb. Some people claim that on the anniversary of his death he leads the pack around the moors, and when he is not leading them, they can often be found circling his grave and howling. The villagers of the time built a large building around the tomb and placed a slab across the top to keep Cabell’s evil ghost from escaping. Cabell’s tomb can be seen in the Devon town of Buckfastleigh. With inspiration like that and Doyle’s genius for setting mood and weaving complex plots, it is no surprise that The Hound of the Baskervilles continues to engage audiences around the world.”
