Service Credit Union hosts groundbreaking ceremony for new Corporate Offices Building

PORTSMOUTH, NH. (April 20, 2011) – Service Credit Union hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, April 19th on the future site of the credit union’s LEED gold certified, new corporate offices building at 2995 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. The 100,000 square foot building is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2012.

Gordon Simmons, President/CEO of Service Credit Union, welcomed credit union, local and state officials to the ceremony where construction began in early spring.

“Our time for more space is overdue and that need had to be addressed. We had known for years that we would need more space,” says Simmons. “But, instead, we invested in branching, products and member service. In 2005, we began seeking property to purchase to construct our new home. We looked at many New Hampshire locations, including here in Portsmouth, and finally chose this fine property.”

Currently, Service Credit Union’s Corporate Offices resides at 2010 Lafayette Road in Portsmouth in a 19,000 square foot building. The new building, designed by the architectural firm of GUND Partnership of Cambridge, Mass., will be constructed with local, New Hampshire labor. Both the new and current Corporate Office buildings will accommodate present and expected future growth over the next ten to fifteen years. Service Credit Union will immediately house over 100 employees, bringing 60 new jobs to the city after completion with plans for expansion of another 40 or more jobs over the next five years.

“We are here to celebrate the building project of a world class organization led by Gordon Simmons,” says John Prokos, Managing Principal of Gund Partnership. “It will be an iconic urban landmark which reinforces urban design.”

Suffolk Construction Northeast President and General Manager Mark DiNapoli said “the building was not an office but a place of influence and importance for members and staff.” He also added it was a symbol of strength and stability.

“Service Credit Union is committed to a clean, friendly environment”, says Gordon Simmons, “thus, we are pleased that we were able to pursue the LEED green initiative (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) directed by the U. S. Green Building Council. Our LEED building addresses the cleanup of a formerly contaminated landsite, water, energy and atmospheric efficiencies, materials and resources as well as indoor environmental quality, innovation and design. We are striving for a LEED Gold certification”. The new corporate offices will be designed and built using strategies intended to improve performance in metrics such as energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction and improved indoor environmental quality.

The four-story building will feature a full service, 24/7 member service call center, foreign exchange, member check imaging processing and control, Finance, community rooms, conference rooms, departmental and executive offices.

“Three community rooms are planned to be offered for use by local city government, not-for-profit organizations and other community based associations to help with the growing need for meeting space in Portsmouth and nearby towns,” says Simmons.

This new building expands Service Credit Union’s footprint in the area. More than 50 years ago, the credit union began at Pease Air Force Base as the Portsmouth Air Force Base Federal Credit Union to serve military and civilian employees there. Now the largest credit union in New Hampshire at more than $1.8 billion in assets and serving the citizens in nine of the ten counties in the state, four towns in Massachusetts and with members around the world, Service Credit Union has grown to serve close to 147,000 members with branches in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Germany. Besides the new corporate offices, the credit union’s current properties will be used by the credit union for present requirements and to expand on future needs.

Service Credit Union is a full service financial institution, offering a wide range of financial products to its members. With 35 branch locations including two staffed 24/7 contact centers, and full internet banking services, Service Credit Union serves anyone who lives or works in New Hampshire (excluding Coos County), 4 towns in Cape Cod, MA., and all branches of the U.S. Military and Department of Defense employees and their families. Service Credit Union has 17 branches in New Hampshire, one in Massachusetts, and 16 branches on U.S. military bases in Germany.

Proposed FY2012 City of Dover Budget Public Participation Invited

It has become evident that the FY2012 City of Dover Budget will require budget adjustments approaching $3 million in order to absorb the downshifting of costs being imposed by the State of NH and significant declines in non-tax revenues. Over the next several weeks, the City Council will be reviewing and ultimately determining priorities for funding of municipal services given the limited resources available.

With the expectation of significant reductions having to be imposed across all municipal departments, our staff have been fielding questions regarding what concerned citizens can do to register your opinions and offer constructive input in relation to the proposed City of Dover Budget.

All are encouraged to contact the Mayor, the City Council and the City Manager regarding funding priorities for our community. Citizen comment and involvement during the budgeting process is welcomed as it helps us to understand the value of municipal services and how various services contribute to the quality of life enjoyed by Dover citizens.

Dover Residents, Business and/or Property Owners

Residents, business owners and/or property owners are all invited to speak at the City Council meetings during the regular and workshop meetings under the agenda item “Citizens Forum”. May is National Electrical Safety Month

Mr. Electric would like to urge residents to take an electrical tour throughout their homes to look for potential hazards. Many hazards are easily identified and corrected. Check to see that lamps and extension cords aren’t cracked, frayed or covered by rugs or furniture. Check light bulbs to determine that the wattage is appropriate for lighting fixtures. Electrical appliances should be kept away from damp and hot surfaces and have appropriate air circulation.

With the arrival of spring comes a lot of yard work. Remember to use caution around pools and water features. Be careful with placement of ladders so that the ladder does not come in contact with overhead lines. Before digging, check to determine the location of underground utilities. Consider adding additional outdoor outlets to reduce the amount of extension cords used. Extension cords should never come into contact with water and are a potential trip hazard as well as a hazard if cut with a lawn mower or other power tools.

Other issues should be looked at by a licensed electrician. Dim or flickering lights, arcs or sparks, sizzling or buzzing sounds from your electrical systems, odors, hot switch plates, loose plugs and damaged insulation are all signs of potential hazards. These situations should not be ignored but should be checked by a professional.

For more information, call Mr. Electric at 603-516-0555.

Be safe this month and every month!

Portsmouth Christian Academy Five-mile walk honors 9/11 airline co-pilot

DOVER, NH — Close to 200 Portsmouth Christian Academy students, alumni, faculty, friends, and staff gathered April 8 for the 9th Annual McGuinness Walk to honor Thomas McGuinness. McGuinness, a former Navy pilot, was the co-pilot of American Airlines Flight 11, the first of the hijacked planes, which flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. McGuinness was the father of PCA graduates Tommy and Jennifer McGuinness.

Each year, at the end of PCA’s Spiritual Emphasis Days, students take to the streets for a five-mile walk in memory of the fallen co-pilot. They obtain sponsors and walk through South Dover to help raise money for a scholarship created in McGuinness’ name. All proceeds from the walk go directly to a tuition assistance fund to benefit a student who demonstrates high personal and moral caliber, is of strong faith, and has a proven desire for high academic standards. To date, the annual walks have raised over $20,000.

“Over the past few years, we’ve walked in rain, snow, and wind,” recalls Stephen Foley, PCA Upper School Principal. “We’ve walked in Portsmouth and Dover, but it has always been great to walk together as a community in memory of Tom. We walk not to recall his death, but to recall his life.” Each step the students take not only keeps his memory alive, but also gives the young people an opportunity to come together as a community to the benefit of another.

Portsmouth Christian Academy is located at 20 Seaborne Drive, Dover, NH. PCA offers a challenging academic curriculum from preschool through high school along with competitive athletic programs and other stimulating extra-curricular activities.
