The Homemakers/ServiceLink partner to offer Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes

            “
There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers; those who are currently caregivers; those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers.” – Rosalyn Carter.
One might think that the human act of caregiving is simple, easy, gratifying - especially if you’re caring for  someone you love. However, the demands of caregiving can be overwhelming and result in burnout damaging a caregiver’s physical, mental and financial health.
To provide caregivers with the tools they need to avoid stress and burnout, The Homemakers Health Services in partnership with ServiceLink and Transitions in Caregiving will be hosting Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes.
“Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” a six-week educational program, is designed to help caregivers learn how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate feelings and balance life, increase the ability to make tough decisions and local helpful resources.
Classes will be held on consecutive Wednesday mornings beginning September 5th from 10 a.m. to noon at The Homemakers Health Services, located at 215 Rochester Hill RoadRochester. A fee of $25 is required for the cost of the program materials.
To assist caregivers attending the classes, adult day care services for caregivers loved ones will be provided by The Homemakers Health Services. Following is the schedule for the six week class:

Week 1 – September 5th - “Taking Care of You.”
Week 2 – September 12th - “Identifying and Reducing
                                                   Stress”
Week 3 – September 19th - “Communicating Feelings, Needs, Concerns”
Week 4 – September 26th - “Communicating in Challenging Situations”
Week 5 – October 3rd  - “Learning from our Emotions”
Week 6 – October 10th - “Mastering Caregiving Decisions”

Registration is limited and preregistration is required for both the class and caregiver assistance. To register for the Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes, persons should contact ServiceLink at 603-332-7398. Those who wish to utilize The Homemakers’ Adult Day services should also contact Linda Howard at 603-335-1770, ext. 126 orlhoward@thehomemakers.org .

Stages at One Washington: Guest Chef Mark Segal of The 100 Club on Sunday, July 29th!

Greetings!

Are you a member of The One Hundred Club and adore the exquisite food?  Did you love Pesce Blue back in its early 2002 heyday?  Have you tasted amazing food at Taste of the Nation, the Heirloom Harvest Barn Dinner, or Field & Spoon events and wondered who was behind it?

If your answer to any of those questions was yes, then chances are you are already a huge fan of virtuoso chef Mark Segal.  We are fortunate to have the unsung hero of The One Hundred Club kitchen joining us at Stages at One Washington as our guest chef on Sunday, July 29th at 7:30pm and we want to make sure all of his biggest fans have the opportunity to join us as we welcome Chef Segal to Stages at One Washington.

Chef Segal grew up experimenting in the kitchen of his family owned restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut, and after a brief flirtation with computers, settled back into his life's calling by becoming a student at the Culinary Institute of America.  After graduation, Chef Segal moved to the West coast and went on to work with some of L.A.'s most accomplished chefs, including Mark Peel and Nancy Silverton at Campanile, Patrick Healy at the Buffalo Club, David Wynns of Les Deux Cafes, and Joachim Spilchal at Pinot Bistro.  After hearing about plans for a restaurant called Pesce Blue in Portsmouth, Segal flew back East for an audition dinner and nailed it.  After his time at Pesce Blue, Chef Segal moved on to become Executive Chef at The 100 Club, a private club in downtown Portsmouth.

Chef Segal has prepared a fantastic and astonishing menu for our dinner on July 29th - this is an event not to be missed.  Call or click here for reservations, and come watch a great chef at work!

 Sincerely,

Evan Hennessey, Chef

Service Credit Union launches free person to person payment service

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (July 20, 2012) – Continuing to improve the online banking experience for its members, Service Credit Union recently launched Popmoney, a free person-to-person payment service.

Now available as part of the credit union's online funds transfer service, Popmoney lets Service Credit Union members send money to others by using an email address, mobile number or account number.  Funds can be transferred easily between accounts either at Service Credit Union or another financial institution.

This service eliminates the hassle of writing a check, having cash on hand, or going to an ATM. Once funds are confirmed, the recipient is notified that money is waiting for them with instructions on how to redeem the funds. Funds will then be electronically deposited to the account of the recipient.

“Popmoney provides state-of-the-art online functionality to move money from a Service Credit Union account to accounts here or at other financial institutions,” says Gordon Simmons, President/CEO of Service Credit Union. “Service Credit Union is proud to offer our members a fast, secure and easy way to send funds person to person free of charge.”

Service Credit Union is a full service financial institution, offering a wide range of financial products to its members.  With 39 branch locations including two staffed 24/7 contact centers, and full online banking services, Service Credit Union serves anyone who lives or works in New Hampshire (excluding Coos County), 4 towns in Cape Cod, MA., and all branches of the U.S. Military and Department of Defense employees and their families. With over $2 billion in assets, Service Credit Union has 21 branches in New Hampshire, one in Massachusetts, and 17 branches on U.S. military bases in Germany.

International Touring A Cappella Group, Ball in the House, to perform at Garrison Players Arts Center on Friday, August 3rd.

International Touring A Cappella Group, Ball in the House, to perform
at Garrison Players Arts Center on Friday, August 3rd.  All Patrons
are Encouraged to Stock Dover Food Pantry.

DOVER - International touring a cappella group, Ball in the House
(BitH), will be making a stop at the Garrison Players Arts Center in
Rollinsford on Friday, August 3rd, performing a variety of music from
the ‘50s to today, as well as original songs. Over the years, the
theatre has become a second home to the group as they try to perform
there biannually. Ball in the House is well known all over the country
as the “Cool Whip Guys,” because of their performance of the famous
jingle for six years on radio and television. The group has also been
seen on the TODAY Show, America’s Got Talent, The Daily Buzz and
Boston’s View with JC Monahan. While in New Hampshire, BitH has become
frequent guests on WOKQ’s “Morning Waking Crew” with Mark and Karen,
as well as WTSN’s “Mike Pomp Show.” Last year, the group started
supporting The Dover Food Pantry by encouraging attendees to bring a
non-perishable food item. “We work with a lot of charities,” says
BitH’s Dave Guisti, “and it’s important to us to always try to tie a
charity into our public shows. We thought the Dover Food Pantry would
be a perfect fit for this show.” The Boston Globe says of the group,
“The five guys of Ball in the House don’t need instruments to make
music. They redefine pop by presenting it a cappella style, with just
their voices.” Tickets for the show are $18 for adults and $12 for
students. They can be purchased at the door, or at the Garrison
Players Arts Center website (www.garrisonplayers.org). The show starts
at 8:00pm, doors open at 7:00pm.

Garrison Players Arts Center (GPAC) is a nonprofit, volunteer-based
community theatre group dedicated to enriching the cultural life of
the area by presenting high-quality theatrical performances geared for
family audiences. Established in 1953, the players encourage people of
all ages to enjoy and participate in the many facets of the performing
arts; and to help maintain the Garrison Players Arts Center. For more
information about auditions, shows, or GPAC, visit the website at
www.garrisonplayers.org.

Raiche July 2012 Update - 2013 HSA Limitations & Kiddie Tax Update

2013 HSA Limitations
Health savings accounts (HSAs) were created as a tax-favored framework to provide health care benefits mainly for small business owners, the self-employed, and employees of small- to medium-sized companies who do not have access to health insurance.
The tax benefits of HSAs are quite favorable and substantial. Eligible individuals can make tax-deductible (as an adjustment to AGI) contributions into HSA accounts. The funds in the account may be invested (somewhat like an IRA), so there is an opportunity for growth. The earnings inside the HSA are free from federal income tax, and funds withdrawn to pay eligible health care costs are tax free.
The recently released 2013 inflation-adjusted deduction for individual self-only coverage under a high-deductible plan is $3,250, while the comparable amount for family coverage is $6,450. This is an increase of 4.8% and 3.2%, respectively, from 2012. For 2013, a high-deductible health plan is defined as a health plan with an annual deductible that is not less than $1,250 for self-only coverage and $2,500 for family coverage, and the annual out-of-pocket expenses (including deductibles and copayments, but not premiums) must not exceed $6,250 for self-only coverage or $12,500 for family coverage.
Kiddie Tax Update
In the good old days, highly taxed parents could shelter some of their investment income by attributing it to their lower taxed older children. No more. The kiddie tax captures that income at the parent's rate. Parents may not realize there are tax rules that could affect their child's investment income. Here's how it works. A child is subject to the kiddie tax if:
  • He or she has not attained age 18 as of the close of the tax year; or has earned income that does not exceed half of his or her support and is either age 18 or a full-time student age 19-23;
  • Either parent of the child is alive at the end of the tax year; and
  • The child does not file a joint return for the tax year.
Note: The kiddie tax applies to children under age 18 regardless of their earned income level.
A child subject to the kiddie tax pays tax at his or her parents' highest marginal rate on the child's unearned income over $1,900 (for 2012) if that tax is higher than the tax the child would otherwise pay on it. The parents can instead elect to include on their own return the child's gross income in excess of $1,900 (for 2012).
An individual eligible to be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer's return may not claim a personal exemption. Thus, a child cannot claim a personal exemption ($3,800 in 2012) if his or her parents can claim an exemption for him or her; whether they actually claim the exemption is irrelevant.
The 2012 standard deduction for a child claimed (or eligible to be claimed) as a dependent on another return is the greater of $950 or the sum of $300 plus earned income, but not to exceed the $5,950 (for 2012) standard deduction that would otherwise be allowable. For 2012, a child with no earned income (e.g., wages) may use a standard deduction to avoid tax on the first $950 of unearned income (e.g., dividends); the next $950 is taxed at the child's tax rate. Therefore, in 2012, the kiddie tax provision does not affect the child until unearned income exceeds $1,900 (or greater if the child itemizes deductions and deductible expenses directly connected to the unearned income exceed $950).
Example: Child with earned income.
Johnny, age 17, earns $2,000 delivering newspapers. He also had $1,300 of dividend income, for a total of $3,300. The earned income from the paper route ($2,000) is fully sheltered from tax by Johnny's standard deduction of $2,300 ($2,000 earned income plus $300; limited to $5,950 in 2012). So, the $1,000 excess ($3,300 - $2,300) will be taxed at a normal 10% tax rate. The kiddie tax does not apply because unearned income is less than $1,900.

Bank of New Hampshire Supports the Granite Homeownership Center

Manchester, New Hampshire – July 16, 2012 – Bank of New Hampshire is proud to announce that they have made a $7,500 contribution towards the Granite Homeownership Center and their Financial Fitness seminar program.

NeighborWorks® Greater Manchester and CATCH Neighborhood Housing are collaborating in the provision of homeownership services through what is now the Granite Homeownership Center.  All of their seminar and workshop programs are coordinated now between the two organizations, helping to balance offerings and share resources.

The Financial Fitness seminar programs are free to participants and provide information about basic financial practices – checking and savings accounts, the importance of savings, budgeting, use of credit, and much more. Participants of these programs tend to move toward pre-purchase counseling after this. It is an important first step in creating well informed, responsible homeowners.

“We are very grateful for Bank of New Hampshire’s continued support of this education program, which provides information about financial practices that are essential and relevant throughout one’s life,” stated Robert Tourigny, Executive Director of NeighborWorks® Greater Manchester.

Bank of New Hampshire, founded in 1831, provides deposit, lending and wealth management products and services to families and businesses throughout New Hampshire. With 21 banking offices throughout New Hampshire and assets exceeding $1 billion, Bank of New Hampshire is the oldest and largest independent bank in the state. Bank of New Hampshire is a mutual organization, focused on the success of the bank’s customers, communities and employees, rather than stockholders.  For more information, call 1-800-832-0912 or visitwww.BankNH.com.

“Up All Night in New Hampshire” August 3 at Dover Library

To take a look at nocturnal animals found in New Hampshire, you could stay up all night, or come to the Dover Public Library for the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire’s presentation, “Up All Night in New Hampshire”, on Friday, August 3 at 10:30am.   A museum educator will discuss nocturnal animals, their homes, and the behaviors that make them well-suited to nighttime living. Children study specimens such as owl talons, examine animal tracks, experiment with night vision, explore animal hearing and listen to night sounds, smell scents from nature, dissect owl pellets, and create an “Artsy Owl”.
This event is part of the Dover Public Library’s Summer Reading program, “Dream Big, Read!”  Registration is required.  Please drop by or call the Children’s Room at 516-6052 to register.

Adornments: “Accessories from the Victorian Era” on Exhibit at the Colonel Paul Wentworth House

“Adornments,” an exhibit of fashionable accessories from the Victorian era, will be on display at the Colonel Paul Wentworth House in Rollinsford through the month of July.  The exhibit features jewelry, fans, handbags, parasols, capes and other items worn by ladies of the Abbott-Goodwin family of Massachusetts from the 1830s through the early 1900s.  The collection is on loan from South Berwick resident Jean Demetracopoulos.
An unusual highlight of the exhibit is a collection of hair jewelry, sentimental jewelry made from the hair of loved ones.  While often thought of as mourning jewelry, just as often such jewelry was presented to a friend or family member as a token of affection.  The collection includes pins, bracelets, earrings, and lockets.
Another highlight is an assortment of fans, including a fan commemorating the opening of trade between Japan and the US in the 1850s, an autograph fan, and a variety of other examples made from ivory, sandalwood, ostrich feathers, silk, and other materials.
An illustrated lecture and guided tour of the exhibit will be presented on Thursday evening, July 19 at 7 pm by Julia Roberts and Tara Vose, curators of the exhibit. Admission to the lecture and tour is $5 for the general public and free to ARCH members.
For more information about the exhibit or the lecture, contact Julia Roberts at (603) 749-1966.
The Colonel Paul Went worth House is located on Water Street in Rollinsford, and is maintained by the Association for Rollinsford Culture and History (ARCH).  The house is open on Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4 pm and at other times by appointment.  Consult the ARCH website atwww.paulwentworthhouse.org  for more information about the Wentworth House and programs offered there.
