5 Green Tips from Yankee Thermal Imaging and Green Alliance!
This week’s tips come from Yankee Thermal Imaging in Dover and Portsmouth.
1. While it's important to maintain ventilation, did you know that restaurants can experience up to 50% of their heat loss through exhaust fans? Maximizing exhaust fan efficiency can lower utility costs while improving comfort. Ask your favorite restaurant if they use a variable speed fan, or if they'd consider installing one!
2. Biofuels can help families and business owners save 45% on heating costs. Oil burning homes can experience significant fuel cost savings by converting to burning local wood pellet fuel. Wood pellets are a clean burning renewable resource, and pellet fuel delivery can be fully automated.
3. LED lights are mercury-free and use less than 10% of the energy required by incandescent bulbs. LED lights also help reduce air conditioning load and, with the cooling season upon us, provide a great way to help control rising utility costs.
4. A drafty window or door can be identified simply by holding up a sheet of paper around the perimeter. Improving the performance of your exterior doors and windows by using this basic technique can save you up 10% on heating.
5. Install ceiling fans. The breeze created by a good ceiling fan can eliminate the need to run your AC on cooler days, and will allow you to set the thermostat a few degrees higher on days when your air conditioning is in operation.

5 Green Tips from Green Lotus Yoga Studio and Green Alliance
This week’s tips come from Lona Kovacs of Green Lotus Yoga Studio in Dover:
1. There are a ton of things you can do with your old yoga mat! Cut it up and use pieces to line drawers and cupboards, to protect your knees in the garden, as pads for table or chair legs, or to make little mouse pads or jar openers!
2. Or, why not donate your mat! Nursing homes can use them to help make it easier for residents to get in and out of bed, and animal shelters are always looking for soft, durable surfaces to line their crates and make the critters more comfortable!
3. Why not repair your old clothes? At home, I've enjoyed taking my old garments and getting them repaired at a tailor, instead of getting rid of them.
4. Don't just compost food scraps! At our studio, we've started composting tissues and other paper products along with any food. As long as they're unbleached, their safe enough to be turned into garden-ready soil!
5. Look for gently used furniture, instead of buying new! Like the book case we just put into the studio! By seeking out perfectly good used furniture -- vintage pieces made from re-claimed railroad ties, barn-board, old pallets, etc -- you'll not only help keep it out of the landfill, you'll be saving money that can then be spent at local businesses!

5 Green Tips from MetalWave and Green Alliance
This week’s tips come from MetalWave:
1. Buy quality products. If you get something likely to run down or wear out over time, such as an electronic component, give preference to the model that can be easily upgraded or scrapped for parts, so that you don't have to junk the whole thing if one part breaks.
2. Buy local -- it cuts down on transporation fuel, reduces our carbon footprint, and helps support local community by keeping money circulating!
3. Always recycle your cans! A used aluminum can be recycled and back on the grocery shelf in as little as 60 days. That's closed loop recycling at its finest!
4. Save water and time when recycling cans -- you no longer need to rinse them out or remove their labels.
5. Recycle worn-out rechargeable batteries like those used in cell phones, computers, or power tools. You can even drop them off at MetalWave!
Recycle your spent CFL bulbs, batteries, and cell phones for FREE with MetalWave at the GA's Party for the Planet, to be held April 20th from 6-10pm at Earthtec in Portsmouth!

5 Green Tips from EcoMovement and Green Alliance
1. Did you know that by composting you can offset the emissions from your car? Not to mention you'd be helping reduce the near 34 million tons of refuse that ends up in landfills every year!
2. We are the source of waste! Before you pick something off the shelf, imagine it as trash going to a landfull. Is it absolutely necessary?
3. Use recycled wood pallets to make a shelf, garden fence, coffee table, or even raised planting beds! Take a look around your office or neighborhood, they're everywhere!
4. If you switched from a paper cup to a reusable mug you'd be helping reduce 363 million pounds of solid waste caused by cups alone! Join the mug revolution! Some places will even give refill discounts!
5. Be part of the recycling loop! Purchase only items made from recycled materials. If you frequent a restaurant that isn't using compostable to-go items -- or isn't composting their food scraps at all -- let them know about EcoMovement's program!

“5 Green Tips” from Green Alliance
This week’s tips come from Johnmark O'Brien, owner of Green Maids.
1. Clean your windows with 4 tablespoons of lemon juice diluted in 3-4 gallons of water. Avoid ammonia-based window cleaners, and help keep your house a little cleaner and greener!
2. Add a capful of vinegar into a spray bottle of water to remove mold and mildew. Avoid using bleach, which can be an irritant on your skin, eyes and affect the respiratory system.
3. Help eliminate the smells on rugs and mattresses using baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda on the effected area, let it sit for about an hour and then vacuum it up.
4. Avoid bringing toxins into the house by using a doormat. People don’t realize what we bring into the house after being outside - especially if you have kids and pets. A simple doormat helps to remove oil, animal waste and pollen from the soles of our shoes.
5. Mixing 1 tablespoon of vinegar with 1 gallon of warm water makes a solution perfect for most floor cleaning jobs. What’s more, you don’t even have to rinse afterwards – it dries itself! – saving you both time and water!

5 Green Tips from Green Alliance and Henningsen Inspections
This week’s tips come from Ed Henningsen, owner of Henningsen Inspections. Enjoy and be sure to share with others on Facebook and Twitter!
1. Turning down your programmable thermostat by 1 degree will save 25-30 gallons of heating oil a year. For about $100 you can buy a great programmable thermostat. Select a comfortable temperature for when you’re home, and set it to 60F when you’re at work or sleeping. It is a myth that you’ll burn more fuel heating the house up.
2. Heat loss through attic hatches and knee wall doors can account for 1 to 3% of your annual heating costs. Glue 4” to 6” of rigid insulation on the cold side of the hatch or door, install gasketing between the door and molding, and use latches to keep the hatch or door tight against the gasket.
3. Use low temperature settings on your washing machine – preferably the cold water cycle – and use cold rinses. Also be sure to wash full loads, which cost less than two low or medium-sized loads.
4. Remove window air conditioners during the winter. If this isn’t practical, install insulated covers that are tight to the siding. This will save you 2% to 3% on annual heating costs.
5. Want to know where your house is losing energy? When frost or snow is covering your roof, it’s easy to see: Just look for the bare spots. For every bare spot there is a source of heat that is melting the frost of snow. Now go inside and fix the leak!
