Garrison Hill Park is making a strong showing in a contest seeking "America's Favorite Park." The contest, sponsored by Coca-Cola, will award a $100,000 grant to the winning park. Second- and third-place parks will receive $50,000 and $25,000 grants, respectively. A park that places between fourth and 25th place will be chosen randomly for a $15,000 grant.
The contest ends July 15. Garrison Hill Park is currently in the top 20. There is no limit on the number of votes cast.
Although other parks are listed as part of the contest, the Recreation Advisory Board met recently and decided to focus on Garrison Hill Park for the contest.
"We are recommending that people select the Garrison Hill Park Revitalization Project, as it's one that brings back one of the hidden gems of the Seacoast to being a true four-season recreation spot and it's one that we are working very hard as a group to having it be funded almost solely by donations of time, material and money," said Scott Kelley, a Recreation Advisory Board member.
Kelley said the Garrison Hill Park Revitalization Project aims to completely overhaul the park, including repainting the tower, removing overgrown or dead trees and bushes, and opening up the top of the hill to allow views of the surrounding area. In addition the project wants to create new hiking, biking, running, cross country skiing and snow shoeing trails, clean up and add better picnic areas and more family friendly activities, and clean up and add new alpine ski runs and a new rope tow.
