The Third Annual Father’s Day 5K at Margaritas is Sunday, June 17, 2012.  Registration for the event is now open.  Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to celebrate fatherhood at this family-friendly run/walk presented by Ross Furniture of Dover.  Proceeds help local families in need gain access to quality health care, at the lowest cost possible, through Goodwin Community Health.

June is Men’s Health Month and the race’s popular necktie theme calls on participants to wear a tie in honor of the dads, brothers and sons who touch their lives. This is a fun race, on a certified course, complete with margaritas-style food and fiesta.
“Helping your neighbors in need, along with a great morning run or walk in honor of Dad, is a wonderful way to start off Father’s Day.  Margaritas goes all out to make this a fun 5K and great Father’s Day tradition,“ says Lara Willard, Race Director and Marketing Manager for Goodwin Community Health.  “Funds from the event help the most vulnerable members of our community gain access to desperately needed health care by minimizing financial barriers to doctors, dentists and mental health professionals.”

Beginner and seasoned runners/walkers can visit http://goodwinch.org/fathers-day-5k-2012/ orhttp://www.active.com/running/dover-nh/fathers-day-5k-2011 for details and registration.  Registration forms can be completed online, mailed in or dropped-off at Margarita’s or Ross Furniture.  The first two hundred adults to register get a free race T-shirt.  Same day registration is available beginning at 7:30am.  The race kicks-off at 8:30am.  Day of registration is twenty-five dollars but advanced registration is only twenty dollars and just five dollars for children under twelve.  Participants are encouraged, but not required, to collect donations and raise funds for the event by setting up their own fundraising page to collect donations when they register for the event.

The top male and female runner will win a twenty-five dollar gift certificate to Runners Alley.  Twenty-five dollar gift certificates to Philbrick’s Sports will go to the top males and females in each of the ten age divisions:  14 and under, 15-19,  20-24, 25-29,  30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-59, and 60 plus.

Children’s Museum of NH hosts Monarch Butterfly Workshop August 22-23

The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire will be hosting the first-ever Monarch butterfly workshop for educators on August 22 and 23 at the Museum’s Dover location.
The two-day “Teaching and Learning With Monarch Butterflies” workshop will offer both field and classroom experiences to train educators on how to teach essential skills in literacy, math, science, geography and more using Monarch butterflies raised in the classroom. Teachers will complete the workshop with all the materials they need to introduce this exciting learning opportunity in their classrooms. The workshop is also open to naturalists, master gardeners and others who want to learn more about these fascinating creatures.
Monarch Teacher Network (MTN) began in August 2001 when eighteen New Jersey teachers were trained at the first “Teaching and Learning With Monarch Butterflies” workshop. That workshop was held at the EIRC facility in southern New Jersey, near Philadelphia. MTN has grown each year since, training teachers and others to bring monarchs into their lives, schools and communities. Workshops are normally conducted in June, July or August. Since 2001, MTN has trained over 4,500 people, holding workshops in 17 states and 5 provinces.
Monarch Teacher Network is made up of veteran teachers (teaching children of varied ages and abilities), non-traditional educators, master gardeners, naturalists, park workers, or anyone who has a passion for the monarch butterfly story and teaching. They share information and resources with each other and can apply for fellowships to visit the monarch sanctuaries in Mexico or California.
As part of the New Hampshire workshop, each participant will receive hands-on instruction, rearing cages, books, posters, DVDs and other materials. They will learn strategies for butterfly gardens and “Monarch Parades,” as well as inquiry-based activities for science, language arts, math, geography, drama, social studies, history and more.
The cost of the workshop is $99 with a limited number of scholarships available. To register, participants should visitwww.monarchteachernetwork.org or call856-582-7000 X110.

The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire is located at 6 Washington Street in Dover and offers two levels of custom-created exhibits for hands-on family learning. Children can explore a wide range of subjects, from dinosaurs, music and aeronautics to world cultures, art and natural history. Open year-round, the museum works closely with schools, social service agencies and educators to develop relevant programming and provide access for all. The museum also hosts a variety of live performances, workshops, classes and special events for families.

St. Thomas Aquinas High School Announces New Athletic Director Ryan Brown

Principal Kevin Collins and
Athletic Director Ryan Brown

In the Spring of 2012, St. Thomas Aquinas High School undertook a monumental task: replacing the legendary Jack Leary as Athletic Director.  It was a long and arduous search, but in the end the ideal candidate emerged: Ryan Brown of St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, Connecticut.

Beginning July 1, Ryan will take over from Jack and begin a new era at St. Thomas Aquinas.  Currently Ryan is the Assistant Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at St. Luke’s, where he has served since 2006.

A three-sport athlete in high school, Ryan is a graduate of Middlebury College (VT) and is also pursuing his Master’s at Quinnipiac University (CT).  In between, Ryan earned 21 credits at Utica College (NY) where he also served as an Assistant Football Coach, Physical Education teacher and Football Recruiting Coordinator.

While at St. Luke’s, Ryan rebuilt the football program, leading them to success in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He also created and implemented a program designed to help instill leadership qualities in student athletes both on and off the field.

When asked about working with student athletes, Ryan indicated “it’s all about making a difference” in the life of a young person. “I had some exceptional role models in my life and I love to share the experiences and lessons I learned from them with young people.”

St. Thomas Aquinas Principal Kevin Collins had this to say about Ryan.  “He’s a big guy with an obvious big heart, ready to take on a big job.  From his first visit, it’s clear he’s going to connect with athletes, coaches and parents.”

The St. Thomas Aquinas High School community welcomes Ryan to the STA “family”.

The new gundalow Piscataqua to open for the summer sailing season Memorial Day weekend

For centuries, shallow draft, barge-style sailboats called gundalows connected up-river communities with Portsmouth, the region’s seaport and primary market town.  Harnessing the wind and riding the tide, gundalows moved bricks, hay, firewood, and goods crucial to the economy and everyday life.

To revive interest in gundalows and the estuary they served, a replica of these once prominent ships was constructed in 1978, and named after the area’s pioneer watershed protector, Captain Edward H. Adams.  In 2002, the nonprofit Gundalow Company was formed to protect the Piscataqua region’s maritime heritage and environment through education and action, using the Adams as a dockside classroom.

The Gundalow Company built a new gundalow named Piscataqua in 2011 to serve as a sailing classroom for school groups and to provide a unique sailing experience for local residents and visitors.  The Piscataqua was constructed using traditional materials and methods while upholding the safety standards and structural integrity required by the U.S. Coast Guard for passenger-carrying vessels.

Starting Memorial Day weekend and sailing through October, the Piscataqua will begin its inaugural season as a public sailing vessel. Two-hour trips will depart three times a day, Thursday through Monday.  Thursday evening Specialty Sails will include concerts and educational lecture series, and guests are welcome to bring picnics aboard. In addition to a knowledgeable and experienced Captain, two Onboard Educators will provide information about the natural and cultural history of the Piscataqua watershed region.  Private charters and school group programs are available throughout the season.

Reservations for day or sunset sailing trips may be made online by visiting the Gundalow Company website: www.gundalow.org, or by calling 603-433-9505.

St. Thomas Aquinas High School Seniors Pay It Forward

Photo Caption: These Senior Student Advisory Board members led the charge for the 2012 St. Thomas Aquinas HigH School Senior Gift.  From left:  Anna Hayes, Luke Gabriel, Molly Dwyer, Sam Quirk, and Dylan Pautler (Missing from photograph Allie Scheu).

Fostering a commitment to serve others is an important component of the St. Thomas Aquinas High School mission.  Throughout their four years at the school, students are offered and encouraged to participate in a plethora of community service activities, many of which they initiate and organize.  From the Penguin Plunge, to a canned food drive, to visiting the elderly at St. Ann next door, students learn the importance of giving back and serving others.
The senior gift program at St. Thomas Aquinas High School works to educate students about the importance of annual giving and gives graduating students their first opportunity to show their support of the school by giving back.
This year, with the leadership of the seniors on the Student Advisory Board (SAB), the seniors chose to start an Alumni Scholarship Fund.

With the rising cost of education, the seniors wanted to leave their legacy at St. Thomas by starting the “Living Legacy Fund” – a scholarship fund designed to help an incoming freshman each year afford to attend the school.  Scholarships and financial aid play a very important role at the school allowing many more students attend than could otherwise.  The school distributes over $500,000 in tuition assistance, helping 1 in 5 families with some level of support.

This year, the senior gift campaign was especially exciting as an anonymous donor challenged the class of 2012 to step up its generosity.  Hoping to inspire the seniors to participate, the challenge was that for each senior who made a donation to the senior gift, the donor would make a donation in that senior’s name to the 2011-2012 Aquinas Fund, the school’s annual giving program.  The donor also hoped to teach and encourage members of the class of 2012 to be philanthropic after high school.

As of today, seniors have achieved a remarkable 60% participation towards their gift.  In fact, alumni, faculty, parents and friends have been so inspired by their leadership and desire to give back, that they have also felt compelled to give.

GARRISON PLAYERS CLOSE 59th SEASON WITH “I HATE HAMLET”

Photo Caption: L to R: Jessica Lyn Berman as Deirdre, Josh Brown as Andy, Megan Karas as Felicia and Leslie Hamblin as Lillian, trying to summon the ghost of John Barrymore.

DOVER – Maybe the name Shakespeare conjures up dusty memories of hours spent bored to tears in high school English classes. Or perhaps you were one of those for whom the cavorting of bawdy Elizabethans was the high point of your week. Either way, you are sure to get a kick out of playwright Paul Rudnick’s explosively funny comedy “I Hate Hamlet,” the season closer at the Garrison Players Arts Center, Route 4 in Rollinsford, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 1- 3, 8 - 10.

Andrew Rally (Josh Brown) is the up-and-coming young star of a recently canceled television series, who has just arrived with his real estate agent, Felicia Dantine (Megan Davenport Karas) at what is to be his new apartment in New York City. Rally, a native of Los Angeles, is more than a little put off by the brooding Gothic trappings of the apartment. The fact that it once belonged to the legendary actor, John Barrymore, does nothing to dissipate Rally's reservations. He is doubly disturbed, as he is soon to perform the difficult part of Hamlet, the role made famous by Barrymore, and he is to do it onstage at Shakespeare in the Park, away from the glitter of Hollywood. As his LA friend Gary (Seth Mazzaglia) calls it, “theatre for squirrels!”

Andrew and Felicia are soon joined by his agent, Lillian Troy, (Leslie Hamblin), and his girlfriend, the 29 year old perennial virgin, Deirdre McDavey (Jessica Berman). Troy, many years ago, had a brief fling with Barrymore in this very apartment. Excited, Felicia claims she is able to communicate with departed spirits through her mother and suggests they try to summon up Barrymore to verify Lillian's claim. Encouraged by Deirdre, Felicia begins the séance…

Under the guidance of British Director Tim Robinson, the laughs promise to be nonstop as Andrew wrestles with his conscience, Barrymore, his sword, and the fact that his fiancée won’t have sex until he has played Hamlet!

Service Credit Union to give free 2012 Boston-Portsmouth Air Show tickets to members with direct deposit

PORTSMOUTH (May 8, 2012) – Service Credit Union returns as the title sponsor of the Service Credit Union Boston-Portsmouth Air Show featuring the United States Navy Blue Angels.  A robust lineup of special events is planned for the week culminating in the credit union hosting its members in a V.I.P. tent directly on the flight line for the air show June 30th and July 1st.

The exclusive ticket offer begins at all New Hampshire branches May 15th and any member with direct deposit can receive up to four free tickets to the air show and be admitted into Service Credit Union’s V.I.P. tent where a free lunch will be served.  Other discounted air show general admission tickets will be on sale at the branches for members and the military.
“Service Credit Union takes a leadership role in supporting our communities,” says Gordon Simmons, President/CEO of Service Credit Union. “We are thrilled to sponsor the Boston-Portsmouth Air Show at Portsmouth International Airport at Pease. It is especially appropriate since Service Credit Union was established in 1957 at Pease Air Force Base. It brings Service Credit Union back to its roots.”

Proceeds from the air show will help support two organizations, Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire and the Daniel Webster Council Boy Scouts of America, as well as a multitude of other New Hampshire nonprofit organizations including Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The contribution to the Brain Injury Association will assist the state organization in developing programs to heighten public awareness regarding safety and prevention and to further develop current support and resource programs for survivors and their families of brain injuries. The Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire is a private, non-profit, family and consumer run organization representing over 5,000 New Hampshire residents with acquired brain disorders and stroke. The BIANH was founded in 1983 by New Hampshire parents seeking to bring home their brain injured children from out of state nursing homes.
The Daniel Webster Council Boy Scouts of America serves more than 16,000 youth throughout New Hampshire with programs that build character, teach citizenship, and encourage physical fitness. Over 5,000 adult volunteers support Scouting programs in the state, and local groups contribute hundreds of thousands of “good turn” service hours in their communities annually.
Service Credit Union is a full service financial institution, offering a wide range of financial products to its members.  With 38 branch locations including two staffed 24/7 contact centers, and full online banking services, Service Credit Union serves anyone who lives or works in New Hampshire (excluding Coos County), 4 towns in Cape Cod, MA., and all branches of the U.S. Military and Department of Defense employees and their families. With over $2 billion in assets, Service Credit Union has 21 branches in New Hampshire, one in Massachusetts, and 16 branches on U.S. military bases in Germany.

5 Green Tips from Yankee Thermal Imaging and Green Alliance!

This week’s tips come from Yankee Thermal Imaging in Dover and Portsmouth.

    1. While it's important to maintain ventilation, did you know that restaurants can experience up to 50% of their heat loss through exhaust fans? Maximizing exhaust fan efficiency can lower utility costs while improving comfort. Ask your favorite restaurant if they use a variable speed fan, or if they'd consider installing one!

    2. Biofuels can help families and business owners save 45% on heating costs. Oil burning homes can experience significant fuel cost savings by converting to burning local wood pellet fuel. Wood pellets are a clean burning renewable resource, and pellet fuel delivery can be fully automated.

    3. LED lights are mercury-free and use less than 10% of the energy required by incandescent bulbs. LED lights also help reduce air conditioning load and, with the cooling season upon us, provide a great way to help control rising utility costs.

    4. A drafty window or door can be identified simply by holding up a sheet of paper around the perimeter. Improving the performance of your exterior doors and windows by using this basic technique can save you up 10% on heating.

    5. Install ceiling fans. The breeze created by a good ceiling fan can eliminate the need to run your AC on cooler days, and will allow you to set the thermostat a few degrees higher on days when your air conditioning is in operation.

Service Credit Union launches new online rewards program

Service Credit Union recently introduced a new online rewards program for debit card use, called Purchase Rewards, as part of their new online banking redesign.

The Purchase Rewards program lets members earn rewards by using their Service Credit Union debit card to purchase merchandise and services. Through this free program, members receive targeted offers to receive rewards on purchases based on members’ shopping history and spending patterns.

There is no limit to the rewards they can earn and there is no need for coupons. Members’ rewards will be automatically deposited to their checking account the month after they redeem the offer.

These personalized offers are made securely as no private information is passed outside Service Credit Union to another party. Offers can be redeemed through purchases, made online or at the retail location.

“As members migrate to online channels, Service Credit Union answers quickly with convenience services like Purchase Rewards,” says Gordon Simmons, President/CEO of Service Credit Union. “We are quick to invest in technology, providing members with these reward benefits.”

HRCU Partners with the Monarch School of New England

Holy Rosary Credit Union recently partnered with The Monarch School of New England and will serve as a training site for students of the school.

The organization serves students with significant disabilities from ages 5 – 21, designing programs based on their individual needs and capabilities. Jordan Brown, a 16-year-old student at the school, is the first to take part in the program with HRCU in a partnership that began in March.

“Jordan is HRCU’s Ambassador and while he is learning new skills, he is also reminding us about diversity and acceptance. He shares his happy spirit and eagerness to please with all of us,” says Chris Patrowicz, VP of Human Resources at HRCU. “Jordan arrives by 10 a.m. proudly wearing his HRCU shirt and excited to be part of our team. Our employees look forward to his arrival and really enjoy his friendly nature.”

Brown’s duties include distributing mail to employees, collating and applying postage to daily outgoing mail and ensuring our employee lounge is clean and replenished with supplies.

The Monarch School of New England is rooted in the belief that each child deserves an environment in which they can flourish.  The students are seen for their abilities – for their capacity to learn and grow.

Service Credit Union reaches $2 billion asset mark

Service Credit Union reported that total assets surpassed $2 billion earlier this year along with a record-high worldwide membership of more than 164,000.

Service Credit Union opened its first branch location in January 1957 on Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. At that time, eight men signed an agreement to establish a credit union to provide affordable financial services and credit to the soldiers and their families stationed on base.

Since that time, Service Credit Union’s mission has remained the same. Being a member-owned cooperative means profits are returned to the members in the form of higher deposit and lower loan rates.

Most of the credit union's growth was achieved over the past 18 years. During that time, assets grew from $282 million to the current level of $2.08 billion, or more than 600% increase in just under two decades. This exceptional growth was fueled by both strong member loan and deposit demand along with Service Credit Union offerings of state-of-the-art technology and unparalleled 24/7 Live Person Service.

“Growth like we have experienced is only possible with the support of our loyal members, who continue to believe in what Service Credit Union has come to stand for, that is, exceptional product and service delivery. Our members continue to spread the word throughout the communities we serve, and we thank them for their support,” says Gordon Simmons, President/CEO of Service Credit Union. “Our volunteer Board of Directors and other committee volunteers have also had a tremendous impact on shaping the credit union's growth, and I am truly grateful for all their efforts. The focus of our credit union's staff has been that of commitment and rendering exceptional member service.”

Simmons also credited the credit union’s philosophy of focusing on people, not profit. “We maintain the focus that each member is a person, not a number, and each member’s needs are unique,” added Simmons.
