Dover, NH - High school students at Portsmouth Christian Academy at Dover students claimed victory at this year’s New Hampshire Quiz Bowl League Seacoast Regional Championship, played at Oyster River High School March 5.
PCA Seniors Eric Baker (Lebanon, ME) and Nate Hafner (Durham), Junior Ben Leavitt (Exeter), and Sophomore Cassidy Rowley (Rochester), won all ten tournament matches to win the regional championship against tough competition from schools such as Phillips Exeter Academy, Oyster River High School, Spaulding High School and other schools from around the state. The win guarantees PCA a berth in the New Hampshire Quiz Bowl League State Championship in April.
Quiz Bowl is a fun and fast-paced Jeopardy-style competition for New Hampshire high school students. Teams compete to win their regional tournaments, which then earn them a spot in the State Championship.
"It's great to win this competition in my last year at PCA with all these people around me. Thank you to everyone who helped us this year," says senior Eric Baker, captain of PCA’s winning ”A-Team” and the school’s 25-member Quiz Club.
“I’m so proud of how well all our five teams played, but particularly pleased that our seniors had the opportunity to crown their four years in Quiz Bowl competition with a regional championship,” says Donna Capern, co-coach of the PCA team. “We play a number of excellent teams all season. I’m constantly in awe of the range of knowledge and the quick recall that all these Quiz Bowl students demonstrate.”
“I was particularly proud of our team for performing so well with one of our regulars, Katii Capern, out sick. This is a great way to mark the final Quiz Bowl season for our seniors, led Saturday by Eric Baker and Nate Hafner,” agreed co-coach Raymond Gamble.
PCA’s active Quiz Club team also competes regularly and successfully on Granite State Challenge, New Hampshire Public Television’s televised high school academic competition. PCA’s team was also the state winner of the Knowledge Master Open academic competition earlier this winter. The team goes on to compete in the Vermont-New Hampshire History Bowl on April 8.
